This story is about the world’s one and only living albino Orangutan, Alba. With her white fur and piercing blue eyes, she has become the rarest and the most unique ape in the entire world.
Her uniqueness is not only beautiful. Because she has become a clear target of poachers and wildlife traffickers.
Unfortunately, as with all albinos, Alba is more susceptible to skin diseases and also hearing and vision loss than her pigment-rich counterparts.
Luckily the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation stepped and took action to keep her safe. They released her story and started fundraisings to buy Alba her own island. Because she will never be safe in her old home.
Her story went viral and after raising 80,000$ Alba’s dream became reality. The foundation purchased a remote island which was made into a sanctuary for Alba and her other 3 friends.
The forested island is home to a 25-acre jungle surrounded by a dense canal system. The BOS provides extra security as well as round-the-clock observation for health and behavior.
The new forest Island for Alba will be secured by security staff patrolling the island regularly. The communications officer Nico Hermanu says that the sanctuary initiative also involves cooperation from the local government and communities. This way, they are safely said that Alba will be well protected in her new forest island.
As she was taken from her home in the wild, she missed learning certain essential requirements for living. Therefore she has to undergo the forest training and socialization session to learn the instinctual way that they would have from their mothers.
Finally the rarest and most unique ape will be able to live peacefully and safely.
